If I push down about 3 or 4 mm it will slide a round into the carrier no problem and it then loads into the chamber and ejects fine.

It's a Sears model 43-103, 19811, aka a Marlin 81. Some mild wear and a few dings, but it's rust free and in remarkable condition for a 50+ year old. Also has a nice peep site.

I guess, you describe it as "mis-aligned" . A lot of the older .22's were aftermarket drilled and tapped for the Weaver "N" mount that fit on the barrel, just in front of the receiver. Marlin did this factory from about 1953 or so on 39A's sold through Sears. If the barrel mount is what you are going to do I believe you need a #2 "N" mount.
